Pick the player first

Android has no built-in audiobook app, and the default music player is a poor stand-in: it will happily play the file and then forget where you were. Install one of these first and the rest is easy.

  • Smart AudioBook Player — the common choice, and good with M4B chapters.
  • Voice — open source, no adverts, straightforward.
  • Listen — a cleaner interface, same capabilities.

Getting the file across

Convert on a computer, then move the M4B over by USB cable, or through Google Drive, or with something like KDE Connect or Syncthing if you already have it running. Most audiobook players watch a folder, so dropping it in the right place is usually enough.

Car stereos want something else

A stereo reading a USB stick will almost certainly refuse M4B. Choose the MP3 folder instead and you get one numbered, tagged file per chapter, which is what those systems are built to handle. You lose chapter marks and position memory, which is the price of that compatibility.

Or run it through a server

Audiobookshelf and Plex both index M4B correctly, read the chapters and the cover, and stream to the phone with position synced across devices. If you already run one, drop the finished file in the library folder and rescan.

Questions

Which Android player should I use?

Smart AudioBook Player is the usual recommendation and handles M4B chapters well. Voice is a good open-source alternative, and Listen is worth a look. All three keep your position and remember playback speed per book.

Can I convert on the phone?

Chrome on Android will run it, but a book-length job wants hours in the foreground and Android will suspend a background tab. Convert on a computer and copy the file over.

M4B or the MP3 folder on Android?

M4B, if your player takes it, and the main ones do. You get chapter marks and position memory in one file. Choose the MP3 folder for a car stereo reading a USB stick, or a player that refuses M4B.

Does the default music app work?

It will play the audio, but it treats the file as music: no chapter list, and it forgets your place. Any of the audiobook players above is a much better experience and they are all free.

What about Audiobookshelf or Plex?

Both index M4B properly, read the chapters and the cover, and let you stream to a phone. Drop the file in the library folder and rescan.
